The incident happened in Mount Vernon on Tuesday, April 18 during the funeral of 18-year-old Tamani Turner, who was fatally shot on Thursday, April 6 on Garden Avenue near East 4th Street, according to Mount Vernon Police.
During the funeral, Mount Vernon detectives were in attendance trying to locate a witness to the murder. When they spotted him while watching the procession, the suspected witness immediately ran away upon seeing the detectives, police said
Detectives then gave chase and caught the witness in the area of Garden Avenue and East 4th Street, also recovering a loaded firearm from his person.
While placing the witness in handcuffs, a second man from Mount Vernon then jumped on the backs of the detectives in an effort to stop them from making the arrest. Ultimately though, the effort proved unsuccessful and both men, whose names were not released, were arrested and quickly taken away from the area of the funeral procession, police said.
They were then taken to Mount Vernon Police Jail and will be arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court on Wednesday, April 19.
